The following was devised in order to encourage discussion and interaction between first year tutorial students. The group of students are presented with either:

(a) a series of graphs with their axis labels erased
(b) a series of RS images

They are then asked to devise labels for the graphs and develop a discussion of the RS images, where they are from and what they show. Each statement they make should be justified and have evidence provided from the diagrams. The tutor then leaves the tutorial for 10-15 minutes in order to allow the students time to discuss the issues. They know they only have 10-15 minutes and are then going to have to stand up and talk so they get on with things and the discussion seems to be fairly intense. The tutor then returns and asks the students to go through their conclusions wrt each image/graph.
