About the Authors

Jacky Birnie (University of Gloucestershire)

Jacky is Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography and Natural Resource Management at the University of Gloucestershire. She has ten years' experience in teaching in higher education, including many field classes. Jacky's research interests and student expeditions have taken her to remote areas. Jacky also taught for three years in secondary education, again with field class experience at various levels, and with mixed ability groups. She is active in research into teaching and learning in geography at the school/higher education interface, and her work has included the Geography Discipline Network project on key skills in geography in higher education.

Annie Grant (University of Leicester)

Annie is Director of the Educational Development and Support Centre (which includes both a Teaching and Learning Unit and a Special Support Centre for Students with Special Needs) and Honorary Reader in the School of Archaeological Studies at the University of Leicester. She has directed three HEFCE-funded initiatives related to the improvement of provision and understanding for students with disabilities, including a current project focusing on mental health. Annie also directed the HEFCE-funded Effective Fieldwork Project and has extensive archaeological fieldwork experience.
