Providing Learning Support for Students with Mental Health Difficulties Undertaking Fieldwork and Related Activities

Case Studies and Discussion Scenarios

Discussion scenario 4

Your field course base is in a small village with a pub, which becomes a popular evening venue for many of the students. Several of the students drink fairly heavily, but they are not causing any real problems and seem to cope with their work in the field. One of the students, David, causes problems when he returns to the base. He is very noisy and students complain that he is waking them up. When he is challenged, he becomes very angry and abusive; some of the other students are clearly rather frightened of him.

  1. What could explain this student's behaviour?
  2. How might you deal with this situation?
  3. What would you do if you thought the student might become violent?
